Meet our new president, David Hess!

Mid-America College of Funeral Service is thrilled to announce the appointment of David Hess as the new President. With an illustrious career spanning over 35 years in funeral service, David brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to excellence in education and professional development.

David has been a pivotal force at Salt Lake Community College, where he developed the curriculum and courses for the  Mortuary Science program. His dedication ensured the program's high standards through meticulous maintenance and assessment, guiding it successfully through the accreditation process with the American Board of Funeral Service Education.

During David’s tenure as Associate Dean of the Division of Health Professions, he was privileged to oversee the Mortuary Science, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Radiologic Technology programs. In this role, he spearheaded transformative academic and cultural initiatives that significantly enhanced both faculty and student success. Under David’s leadership, the division underwent a dramatic shift, revitalizing faculty morale and fostering a dynamic, thriving academic environment.

David has held esteemed positions such as Chair of the Senate Curriculum Committee and the Curriculum Analysis & Implementation Council, contributing significantly to several sub-committees at Salt Lake Community College.

Nationally, David has served as Vice-chair of the Committee On Accreditation, Chair of the National Board Exam Liaison Committee and participated in multiple curriculum reviews with the American Board of Funeral Service Education. His contributions to the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards and tenure as past president of the University Mortuary Science Education Association underscore his leadership and dedication to the field.

David's career as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Utah, Illinois, and Missouri reflects his extensive expertise. His active involvement in community service, various clubs, and organizations, along with over 500 hours of continuing education and professional development, highlights his unwavering commitment to the profession. Recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International, David also served as Deputy Coroner in Alexander County, Illinois.

David's academic achievements are equally impressive, with a Master of Science degree in Education focusing on Vocational Education, a Bachelor of Science degree in small business management, and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Mortuary Science and Funeral Service from Southern Illinois University.

Since joining Mid-America, David has embarked on the process of obtaining his Indiana Funeral Director license. He looks forward to bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to our institution, working closely with our students, staff, and the community at large. He is eager to contribute to the educational experience, provide support, and engage with the community in meaningful ways, fostering a positive and enriching environment for all.
